Volunteer Opportunities: Internships

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR AN INTERNSHIP
WITH THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY?

The Legal Aid Society has Summer, and Fall and Spring semester internship opportunities for law and undergraduate students.

Interns assist Legal Aid attorneys in representing individuals and families in adversarial proceedings in D.C. Superior Court and before a variety of public agencies.  Law student interns are given substantial responsibility and engage in legal research and writing and extensive factual investigation of cases. Typical investigative tasks include witness interviews, home inspections, retrieving government agency files and review of documents. Undergraduate interns also assist with investigative tasks, answer Legal Aid’s intake phone line, file and copy documents in DC Superior Court and a variety of public agencies.  Law student and undergraduate interns also may have opportunities to attend hearings, trials and/or administrative hearings.

Summer interns are expected to work full time. During the school year, interns are required to work at least 10 hours per week, to be arranged according to their schedules.

Law student applicants should send a resume, writing sample and cover letter expressing a preference to work within one of Legal Aid’s three substantive units (housing, family law, or public benefits) to the address or e-mail below.  Undergraduate applicants should send a cover letter, resume and writing sample, but need not specify a preference for any particular substantive unit.
