PRO BONO WITH LEGAL AID: HOW YOU CAN HELP

Each year, Legal Aid receives thousands of requests for legal services.  Although our attorneys represent several hundred of these clients and provide brief assistance to several hundred more, there are many individuals and families who we regretfully must turn away because we don’t have the resources to serve everyone in need.  That’s where you come in …

Legal Aid’s Pro Bono Referral Program refers cases to attorneys working in private practice and government. The matters initially are screened by Legal Aid staff.  An experienced Legal Aid attorney is assigned as a mentor for each matter referred and is available to answer questions, provide sample pleadings, discuss relevant case law and strategy, and provide ongoing guidance as the case moves forward.

If you accept a case referred from Legal Aid, you could:

  • Prevent a family from being evicted

  • Secure a tenant’s rights to safe and well-maintained housing

  • Help a survivor of domestic violence secure a child custody or support order

  • Obtain benefits and health care for someone who can no longer work due to disability

  • Preserve home ownership for a family facing foreclosure

  • Achieve justice for an individual or family in our community living in poverty
