Volunteer Opportunities: Pro Bono
LEGAL AID SOCIETY
PRO BONO REFERRAL PROGRAM
The Legal Aid Society receives thousands of requests for
legal services each year. Although Legal Aid staff represent
several hundred clients each year and provide brief assistance
to several hundred more, still there are many individuals
and families who we regretfully must turn away because we
don’t have the resources to serve everyone in need.
That’s where you come in ….
Legal Aid’s Pro Bono Referral Program
refers cases to attorneys working in private law firms and
government agencies who seek to represent clients on a pro
bono basis. The matters referred include cases in the areas
of housing, family law, and public benefits, as well as,
a limited number of appellate matters. The matters initially
are screened by Legal Aid staff prior to referral, and an
experienced Legal Aid staff attorney is assigned as a mentor
for each matter that is referred. Legal Aid mentors are
available to any questions, provide sample pleadings, discuss
relevant case law and strategy, and provide ongoing guidance
as the case moves forward.

ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
In addition to the Legal Aid Society’s Pro Bono Referral
Program, volunteer attorneys assist Legal Aid in a variety
of ways including conducting client intake, co-counseling
on complex litigation matters, working on special projects,
and providing translation services. If you are interested
in exploring volunteer opportunities beyond the Pro Bono
Referral Program, please contact Jodi Feldman, Director
of Pro Bono and Intake Programs, at (202) 628-1161 or
