On October 1, Legal Aid’s second Generous Associates Campaign CulinAerie Cooking Competition took place at CulinAerie, a recreational cooking school in DC co-founded by Susan Holt.

Around 50 people from nine local law firms participated in the competition, which was judged by four celebrity judges: Bonnie Benwick, Food Editor for the Washington Post; Deth Khaia, Chef de Cuisine at Doi Moi; Mikko Kosonen, former Executive Chef for the Finnish Ambassador to the U.S.; and Matt Culbertson, owner of Radius Pizza.

Each firm fielded a team of cooks, and had one hour prepare a dish that incorporated the secret ingredient: butternut squash. Teams were scored on presentation, unique use of ingredients, and overall taste.

Though the judges reported that all the dishes were appetizing, the Miller & Chevalier team prevailed, receiving the highest overall score for its “Butternut squash chips topped with crispy shredded brussels sprouts, sweet and smoky bacon, butternut squash puree, and a sprinkle of cayenne.”

The highest score for flavor went to Jenner & Block, which finished second overall with its “Roasted butternut squash bisque with candied bacon, green apple and fried shallot."

Finishing third, and winning the best presentation category, was the Paul Weiss team for its “Shrimp and butternut ‘grits’ with bacon, toasted pine nuts, and chives."

And, Wiley Rein, earned honorable mention for "most unique use of secret ingredient" for their dish: "Butternut squash curry over cilantro rice, served with grilled shrimp."

Although neither team technically finished in the top three of the cooking competition, also worthy of mention were the efforts of WilmerHale and Latham & Watkins, who were number one and two in Generous  Associates Campaign, raising well over a quarter of a million dollars between the two firms.

Legal Aid wishes to express its profound gratitude to CulinAerie’s Susan Holt, who donated her time and resources to hosting the competition for the second year in a row. We also, of course, thank all of our Generous Associates Campaign participating law firms which together raised a record-breaking $1.25 million in this year’s Generous Associates Campaign.

The nine firms participating in the cooking competition were:

* Foley Hoag LLP
* Jenner & Block LLP
