Aida Fitzgerald is a senior staff attorney in the Public Benefits Law Unit. Aida represents clients in a wide range of public benefits matters, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, (SNAP), Medicaid, Medicare, and unemployment insurance.
Prior to joining Legal Aid in August 2018, Aida was a staff attorney with the Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS), the public defense agency in Massachusetts. While at CPCS, Aida represented indigent clients in three of the agency’s divisions: Public Defender (criminal), Children and Family Law, and Mental Health Litigation.
Aida received her B.A. from Marquette University, then volunteered for ten months with AmeriCorps NCCC prior to earning her M.S.W. from the University of Washington. After working as a social worker in Seattle, Aida received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. During law school, Aida interned at public defender agencies in Alexandria, VA and Seattle, WA and served as a student attorney in UVA’s Innocence Project and Criminal Defense clinics.
Appointed as the D.C. Council Chairman's designee to the Advisory Committee to the Office of Administrative Hearings in September 2021. (to be added to the end of the bio)
