Neesa Sethi

Senior Project Attorney

Neesa Sethi is a Senior Project Attorney in the Housing Law Unit. She helps manage Legal Aid’s housing-related projects, including the Landlord-Tenant Court-Based Legal Services Project and Housing Right to Counsel Project. She facilitates coordination and collaboration among partner organizations and pro bono participants in an effort to increase tenants’ access to counsel, prevent unnecessary evictions, and preserve affordable housing. In addition, she provides general support to the Housing Law Unit and helps develop training curricula for housing law practitioners.

Between 2015 and 2018, Neesa was a Staff Attorney for Legal Aid’s Pro Bono Program. Our Pro Bono Program works with volunteers from the legal community to greatly expand Legal Aid’s capability to serve low-income D.C. residents. Neesa’s work had a special emphasis on establishing and managing pro bono projects and law firm partnerships, including projects focused on helping clients secure Social Security disability benefits and providing representation to clients defending against eviction cases.

Prior to joining Legal Aid in March 2015, Neesa practiced law at boutique plaintiff-side litigation firms, Weisbrod Matteis & Copley PLLC and Gilbert LLP, where she represented policyholders in complex insurance coverage disputes and worked on matters in a range of other areas, including civil rights, consumer protection, and whistleblower claims. Neesa also clerked on the Supreme Court of Texas and served as a pro bono attorney at the ACLU Legislative Office. In addition, she served as an intern for the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project and the Federal Public Defender.

Neesa graduated with a B.A. and B.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. She received her J.D. with pro bono distinction from Stanford Law School, where she was a public interest fellow and served on the board of the Stanford Journal for Civil Rights & Civil Liberties.
