Karen C. Bates
Senior Development Associate
Karen C. Bates joined Legal Aid in March 2015. As the Senior Development Associate, Karen is involved in all aspects of fundraising for Legal Aid, including proposal development, foundation relations, donor cultivation, and special events.
Prior to joining Legal Aid, Karen was Development Director at the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project, which serves low-income individuals who are victims of domestic violence or have other urgent family law needs. She also has consulted with numerous local nonprofits on proposal and policy development.
From 2007 to 2009, Karen served in the administration of Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, advocating on the District’s behalf with Congress and Federal officials as a member of the Office of Policy and Legislative Affairs. Prior to that, she was an associate at HoganLovells, where she represented clients in the health care industry and handled pro bono matters involving family law, housing, public benefits and immigration.
