After eight suspenseful weeks, the 2016 Generous Associates Campaign has concluded with another record-breaking result. This year’s Campaign has raised $1,475,000, eclipsing last year’s (record-breaking) total by more than $100,000!
Legal Aid is deeply grateful to all who helped make justice real this summer – most of all, to our Co-Chairs and Coordinators – who devoted a tremendous amount of time and energy to this effort. This year’s Campaign was the most successful fundraiser – of any type – in Legal Aid’s 84-year history.
As Honorary Chair Neal Katyal of Hogan Lovells put it, "I am so pleased by the results of Legal Aid's Generous Associates Campaign this year. I could not be more proud of the Co-Chairs and Coordinators who worked so hard this summer to achieve a record-breaking Campaign. Their enthusiasm and generosity has demonstrated the best of our profession by supporting Legal Aid’s mission to make justice real for D.C. residents living in poverty.” Legal Aid Executive Director Eric Angel added, “The last day surge in donations made things stressful, but exciting, for us at Legal Aid. We could not be more grateful to our law firm friends and supporters. Survivors of domestic violence will get to safety, families will be able to stay in their homes, homeowners will avoid foreclosure, the elderly will receive the health care they need and to which they are entitled under the law because of this extraordinary campaign.”
This year’s Campaign was suspenseful – but exciting – from beginning to end, with fiercer-than-ever competition between firms. Indeed, the top two firms raised a combined $300,000 – more than 20% of the Campaign total! This incredible distinction goes to Latham & Watkins ($176,000) and WilmerHale ($123,000), earning them both slots in the CulinAerie Cooking Competition.
Notably, the next two highest firm fundraising efforts both broke their previous records, with Williams & Connolly and Mayer Brown raising $84,000 and $56,000, respectively. Also worthy of special mention are the other firms that led in their respective size categories:
Kirkland & Ellis
Alston & Bird
Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett
Legal Aid congratulates these firms and all the firms that placed in the Top Fundraising Firms competition this year.
It is truly extraordinary that D.C.’s generous associates (and partners and others) have not only surpassed last year’s enormously successful effort, but also made this the most successful Campaign in Legal Aid’s history. This Campaign raised more than one quarter of Legal Aid’s annual budget, so it is no exaggeration to say that survivors of domestic violence will get to safety, families will remain safe in their homes, and elderly D.C. residents will receive the health care they need and to which they are entitled under the law because of what was accomplished by D.C.’s generous lawyers this summer. We cannot thank you enough.
