D.C. Pro Bono Week, sponsored by the Washington Council of Lawyers (WCL), kicks off on October 25! Pro Bono Week is a chance of us to celebrate pro bono contributions and expand our commitment as a community to pro bono service. Our local Pro Bono Week coincides with the American Bar Association’s annual National Pro Bono Celebration.
This year’s Pro Bono Week features a great lineup of trainings, clinics, court tours, social events, and more. Please click here to see the full lineup of Pro Bono Week events.
The events include a guided tour of the D.C. Superior Court’s Landlord and Tenant Branch cosponsored by Legal Aid and Neighborhood Legal Services Program on Tuesday, October 27.
Our very own Beth Mellen Harrison, Director of Legal Aid’s Landlord and Tenant Court-Based Legal Services Project and a ten-year veteran of housing law practice will lead the tour. This is a fantastic opportunity to get an inside perspective on what goes on in this fast-paced, high-volume court and to learn about how you can help low-income individuals and families assert their rights and remain in their homes.
We hope many of you will take this opportunity to celebrate and learn more about the D.C. legal community’s unparalleled commitment to pro bono service!
Legal Aid’s robust Pro Bono Program relies on key partnerships with law firms and individual lawyers who: help tenants stave off evictions and secure rights to safe and well-maintained housing; help families at risk of foreclosure maintain home ownership; represent victims of domestic violence seeking protection orders; assist parents in achieving family stability through child custody and support arrangements; represent individuals seeking disability benefits because their deteriorating health prevents them from working; and, ensure that persons living in poverty access benefits available to them.
Last year, Legal Aid pro bono volunteers devoted more than 33,000 hours – valued at over $17 million – to make justice real for low-income individuals and families in our community. We celebrate all of our dedicated pro bono volunteers throughout the city who contributed your time and talent to this extraordinary effort!
