D.C. Pro Bono Week 2017 is slated for October 22-28 and will be full of opportunities to learn more about D.C.’s public interest community and get involved with pro bono service.

Each fall, the Washington Council of Lawyers sponsors D.C. Pro Bono Week as part of the American Bar Association’s annual National Pro Bono Celebration. D.C. Pro Bono Week reflects this city’s robust pro bono community, celebrates pro bono contributions, and works to expand pro bono service.

In preparation for D.C. Pro Bono Week, legal nonprofits, law firms, and government agencies from around the city have come together to organize a week of service and learning. This year, there will be several brand-new event offerings, as well as popular events from prior years, including clinics, site visits, a panel discussion, and more. Click here for event listings.

On Thursday, October 26, Legal Aid and the Neighborhood Legal Services Program are co-hosting a site visit at D.C. Superior Court’s Domestic Relations Branch for Pro Bono Week. Through observation, a guided tour, and discussion, participants will have an opportunity to learn about child custody, child support, paternity, and divorce litigation from the perspective of the bench, practitioners, and litigants. Participants will also hear about how pro bono representation in child custody and support matters can help vulnerable individuals secure safety and stability for their families.

Legal Aid integrates pro bono into almost every aspect of our program, significantly expanding the impact of our work and the number of individuals and families we can serve. Last year, pro bono attorneys and other volunteers devoted a record-breaking 36,800 hours to making justice real for our client community by providing full representation to clients referred from Legal Aid, conducting initial interviews with prospective clients, staffing our annual Medicare Part D clinics, and much more.
