As the holidays approach, I want to make sure readers of this blog are aware of a convenient way to support Legal Aid when you shop online for family and friends. If you are purchasing gifts through Amazon, please consider enrolling in “Amazon Smile,” a program that allows you to choose a non-profit to receive a percentage of every eligible purchase you make on Amazon’s website.
It’s really easy; there are just two steps:
- First, go to smile.amazon.com from the web browser on your computer or mobile device and select Legal Aid as the charitable organization you would like to receive a donation when you purchase an item that is eligible for the program. Just like that, Legal Aid will receive 0.5% of the price of any eligible item you buy. (Not everything is eligible for the program, but eligible products are marked “Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” on their product detail pages.)
- Second, bookmark this link (smile.amazon.com) and use it whenever you shop on Amazon, because you must enter the website that way for Legal Aid to get credit for the purchase.
Thank you, in advance, for taking a moment to consider helping Legal Aid “make justice real” for more low-income residents of the District of Columbia who have urgent legal needs during the holiday season and throughout the year.
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions at GKelley@LegalAidDC.org.

For more than 80 years, the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia has been ensuring that the American system of justice works for everyone, especially those living in poverty. Legal Aid is a nonprofit law firm that, with the support of the private legal community, represents clients who have no other means of obtaining legal assistance in civil cases. Since its founding in 1932, Legal Aid has worked to help thousands of low-income D.C. residents keep their homes, stabilize their families, access health and government benefits, and feel safe in their communities.
