You can get CHIP From Conception to End of Pregnancy if your gross income is below 324% of the Federal Poverty Level. See the chart for monthly income limits through October 1, 2026. These numbers increase due to inflation every year on October 1.

How do I apply for CHIP From Conception to End of Pregnancy?

You can apply through the Department of Human Services (DHS).  

  • Legal Aid recommends applying in-person at a DHS service center or online via the District Direct website or app.  
  • You can also apply by mail or fax, but Legal Aid does not recommend using those methods. 
  • For more information on how to apply, go to dhs.dc.gov/page/public-benefits.

  • Proof of your identity 
  • Proof that you live in DC 
  • Proof of income 
  • You must say on the application that you are or recently were pregnant, but you do not need to submit proof of pregnancy like a doctor’s letter.

What happens after I apply for CHIP From Conception to End of Pregnancy?

The Department of Human Services must process your application within 45 days and send you a notice. If you are approved, you will be enrolled in a Managed Care Organization and will be sent an insurance card.

If DHS does not process your application within 45 days or if DHS denies your application, you can file an appeal with the Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) within 90 days of the notice of denial. You can contact Legal Aid DC for assistance with your appeal.
