Songo Wawa is a Staff Attorney in the Public Benefits Law Unit. Songo represents clients in a wide range of public benefits matters, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, Medicare, and unemployment insurance.
Prior to joining Legal Aid DC, Songo provided direct representation, advice, and advocacy to DC residents in family law, estate planning, and probate matters as one of eight fellows at D.C. Affordable Law Firm (DCALF).
Songo received her B.A. from the University of San Diego, and her J.D., cum laude, from the University of the District of Columbia, David A. Clarke School of Law. She received an LL.M. Degree in Advocacy from Georgetown University in 2025.
While in law school, Songo provided legal representation as a student attorney in both the Criminal Law Clinic, where she represented indigent individuals in criminal cases and parole matters; and, in the Whistleblower Protection Clinic, representing clients who fell victim to illegal conduct at the hands of corporations and the government. Songo served as Articles Editor of the University of the District of Columbia Law Review, a National Bar Institute Law Scholar, a LexisNexis Rule of Law Fellow, a Professional Responsibility teaching assistant, and a Civil Procedure research assistant. She worked as a legal intern at the Government Services Administration and the Maryland Office of the Public Defender.
