Magnolia Alvarez Velasquez

Magnolia and her family
Advocating for DC's Immigrant Community

Ms. Velasquez Alvarez was uncertain of her immigration status after she came to the U.S. from Guatemala more than 15 years ago. She also wanted to ensure her two children were protected and had opportunities for their futures. She contacted Legal Aid DC, who helped her clarify her immigration status and gain legal custody of her daughter, an important first step toward permanent residency. Legal Aid DC also helped Ms. Velasquez Alvarez’s adult son Douglas secure a work permit so that he could help provide for his family.

Ms. Alvarez Velasquez, who runs a successful tamale stand in Mt. Pleasant, advocated for the decriminalization of street vending in DC by testifying at the DC Council – which ultimately passed the Street Vendor Advancement Act in April 2023.

Ms. Alvarez Velasquez was honored by Legal Aid DC in 2024 with the Partnership Award at the 34th annual Servant of Justice Awards Dinner.
