Amara Legal Project

Survivors of sex trafficking and those harmed by the commercial sex industry face innumerable legal and non-legal challenges. Through legal services and case management, the Amara Legal Project team helps clients navigate these challenges to pursue justice and healing.

The Amara Legal Project supports survivors with:

- Civil Protection Orders
- Child custody and child support
- Divorce
- Criminal record clearing (vacatur, expungement, and sealing)
- Survivor advocacy in criminal cases
- Name changes
- Gender marker changes
- Consumer law and debt
- Housing issues
- Public benefits
- Immigration

In addition to work on behalf of individual clients, the Amara Legal Project also raises awareness about human trafficking in the District and advocates for a more equitable legal system for individuals impacted by sex trafficking or involved in sex work.

The Amara Legal Project was launched in 2026, when the nonprofit Amara Legal Center became part of Legal Aid DC after 13 years in operation.
