Legal Assistant/Paralegal

Phil McCarthy joined Legal Aid in August 2018 as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal. Phil is a DC native and graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia with a B.A. in Finance and a Minor in Comparative Literature. While at Georgia, Phil served as the Captain and Treasurer of the UGA Men’s Club Lacrosse Team and volunteered weekly as an after-school tutor at Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela serving at-risk, Latinx youth. Phil participated in an Alternative Spring Break Trip to the southwest border of the United States and Mexico. There, Phil hiked the migrant trails with the Ajo Samaritans in Southern Arizona and heard stories from migrants in the border town of Nogales, Mexico. Following graduation, Phil served as a Jesuit Volunteer in Philadelphia working at a homeless shelter for men, Our Brothers’ Place. At the shelter, Phil worked as a Case Manager, assisting clients in reaching their housing, financial, and greater life goals. At Legal Aid, Phil provides support to the Consumer, Policy Advocacy, and Appellate Units.
